Executive summary

Rating: Selective Accumulate.

Andersen Genève is two markets moving in opposite directions. The first is the founder era: 1980s and 1990s pieces Svend Andersen led personally, above all the unique complications in Jean-Pierre Hagmann cases and the early world timers that trace back to his years on Louis Cottier's watches at Patek Philippe. Since 2021 this segment has re-rated two to three times. The second is the post-2015 catalogue built by the current owner's team: 50-piece jumping hour editions, the Celestial Voyager series, Communication 45 and the CHF 184,000 Rattrapante Mondiale. The only verified secondary print in that segment cleared 22% below retail.

The gap between founder-era and modern prices is the hypothesis this report examines. The independent bid of 2025 to 2026 rewards firsts, hand work and provenance, which Andersen has in the founder era at five-figure prices. A 50-piece modern edition equals a year of output and has no scarcity story. That is the whole basis of the call: Accumulate the documented founder-era firsts and uniques when they appear at auction estimates still set by the old market, and Avoid at Retail the modern editions until the secondary shows a print at or above list.

The succession overlay does not change this. Ownership passed to Pierre-Alexandre Aeschlimann in March 2015. Svend Andersen, born 1942, is the living archive rather than the producer. Future archive access and continuity of expertise could affect documentation and buyer confidence, but do not determine a price outcome. Daniels and Roth show re-ratings come from estate provenance, scholarship and curated sales, not from the news. Vincent Calabrese, the AHCI co-founder, is the counter-example: his ordinary work still trades in the low four figures.

The 1884 World Time, 120 pieces from 2004 on a restored A. Schild base, is the Andersen in this collection and a good watch to own and write about. I rate it Hold: a flat market for a decade, a piece to add only at a secondary discount to dealer asks, and not the entry point for Andersen exposure with appreciation potential.

Asking prices are not anchors. Chrono24 lists a white gold 1884 at about USD 57,000, a Japanese dealer offers one without its original buckle at JPY 3,090,000, and a US dealer asks USD 29,000 for a Mundus against a live Loupe This estimate of USD 8,000 to 12,000. Spreads of two to five times are the clearest measure of how thin this market is.

Thesis

My focus is the gap between auction evidence and the prices collectors are asked to pay, with each configuration assessed separately.

First, Andersen's historical position is real and under-priced. Svend Andersen spent 1969 to 1979 in Patek Philippe's complications workshop, opened his atelier in 1980 and co-founded the AHCI with Vincent Calabrese in 1985; the GPHG gave the pair its Special Jury Prize in November 2023. The catalogue holds four firsts: the 0.9mm world time module (1989), the 4.2mm Mundus (1994), the 1996 Secular Calendar with its 400-year Gregorian correction, and the automata that began with Eros (1997). A world first still trades at CHF 45,000.

Second, the market is sorting the catalogue. Phillips has sold ten Andersen lots between 2022 and 2026, all of them, mostly above high estimate, and placed the Hagmann uniques beside Journe and Pratt in its Reloaded sale. Sotheby's Hong Kong in autumn 2024 could not place a yellow gold Columbus (lot 2634, October) or the white gold 1884 No.099/120 (lot 8854, September) at HKD 60,000 to 80,000 estimates; Collector Square's index records both as not sold, while Sotheby's hides the results behind a login. That is an estimate contradiction, not a demand contradiction, and it shows a buyer pool that is small and venue-sensitive.

Third, the modern editions have no scarcity edge. Official output is about 50 pieces a year; Aeschlimann told Wristcheck in 2022 it was no more than 20. A Rising Sun 50, a Black Jade 50 and a Celestial Voyager 20 exceed a year of production each cycle.

The 1884 sits between the two markets. Made in 2004 for the 120th anniversary of the International Meridian Conference and Sandford Fleming's time zones, under Svend's management but with no serial-level evidence of his hand, it has a strong story and a weak mechanism. Owning one has not changed that reading; it has sharpened it.

What the evidence shows

Five tiers. The appreciation study's direct answer is a tiered map, not a brand view.

  1. Svend-led unique complications of the 1980s and 1990s in Hagmann cases with full documents. Three prints at CHF 114,300 (refs. 360, 369, 465) against CHF 34,000 in 2021 set the top of the brand.
  2. Early world timers with a clear first: the Communication 24 subscription series with Hagmann hinged lugs, and the 24-piece platinum Mundus. Both sit in the low USD 20,000s at auction while dealers ask USD 29,000 to 40,000.
  3. The 1996 Secular Calendar, fewer than 30 made per Europa Star or under 100 per Monochrome, preferably platinum or white gold with a JHP stamp and factory service.
  4. Among modern jumping hours, only the 40th Anniversary platinum BlueGold (40 pieces, 2020) as first of the series, and true uniques such as the TimeForArt piece at USD 56,700 in 2022. Rising Sun only at a secondary discount.
  5. Eros and Montre à Tact only for early, unique or artistically broad examples. Eros XL at CHF 38,100 shows the upside; ordinary examples have made USD 14,000.

The retail-to-secondary discount. Rising Sun is the cleanest evidence in the file: CHF 48,800 list, CHF 38,100 with premium, full set, in warranty. The Celestial Voyager ELA unique made CHF 47,880 at Christie's in November 2024, below the CHF 58,800 series retail even with a charity bid. The Chaykin Joker made CHF 56,700 against CHF 88,000 list. Jumping hour list prices rose from CHF 41,600 to CHF 52,800 in three years while the secondary did not follow. These discounts are individual observations, not a uniform discount to apply to the modern catalogue.

The "8 pieces" caveat. The Rattrapante Mondiale is the first split-seconds world timer and the eight platinum pieces are real. But Hodinkee's February 2026 workshop visit confirmed the atelier holds further Venus 179 ébauches and will take direct commissions in other configurations. Eight is the announced series, not the family total. At CHF 184,000, above Rexhepi's Chronomètre Contemporain II, with a US dealer ask of USD 314,500, the price assumes a success story with no secondary evidence.

Where the 1884 sits. 120 pieces: 001 to 050 rose gold, 051 to 100 white gold, 101 to 120 platinum. Calibre 1127OC (ref. 112700) on restored and refinished vintage A. Schild 1716/1862 automatic ébauches with Andersen's world time module. 41mm. The verified price history is a flat line: HKD 60,000 in 2015, CHF 10,000 hammer in 2022, a September 2024 Sotheby's Hong Kong offering of the same No.099/120 at HKD 60,000 to 80,000 recorded as not sold by Collector Square, and no verified 2026 transaction. Platinum at 20 pieces is the only variant with a scarcity case, and its EUR 66,000 dealer ask has no sale behind it. The older observations are insufficient to establish a current fair-value range. A missing buckle, documentation or service history needs a piece-specific assessment and replacement-cost evidence; a fixed percentage deduction is not supported by this sample.

The succession overlay. The legal and operating handover happened in March 2015. Aeschlimann is sole owner with no outside investor, about six watchmakers, and the Marco Poluzzi case-making workshop in La Chaux-de-Fonds, owned by the company since 2022 (Monochrome, June 2025). Svend visits, advises and authenticates. His exit is therefore a documentation event: pieces certified while he can still confirm them gain, undocumented pieces lose their living archive. It is not a supply event, because supply of his work stopped years ago and modern supply continues regardless. The comparables agree. Daniels' Space Traveller II went from GBP 1,329,250 at the 2012 estate sale to GBP 3,196,250 in 2017 on five years of scholarship. Roth's originals rose 55% only after the 2023 corporate relaunch. Genta's ordinary Retro Classics still trade at EUR 1,000 to 5,000. Only firsts, uniques and hand-made pieces re-rate, and only when someone curates them.

The calls follow the evidence, not the brand. Accumulate is reserved for the four founder-era groups where a technical first or a Hagmann-cased unique already has a re-rating on record and auction estimates still lag dealer asks; each piece still needs archive confirmation, so the brand-level call is Selective. Columbus in the rare metals is a Hold: the most liquid Andersen and the easiest exit, but 500 pieces in total cap what a Svend-era halo can do, and the standard yellow gold version at dealer asks is Avoid at Retail. The modern jumping hours and the Celestial Voyager editions are Avoid at Retail because the only prints sit below list and each new version dilutes the last. The Rattrapante Mondiale and the platinum 1884 are Watch: one has no secondary at all, the other has 20 pieces and no verified sale. The white and rose gold 1884 is a Hold, which is exactly how the one in this collection is held: a flat decade, wearable and well documented, worth adding to only below dealer asks and never as the vehicle for Andersen appreciation.

At white gold 1884 money, Columbus in white gold or platinum has a more mature auction market and an easier exit; Mundus near its USD 22,112 print has the stronger technical record; an early Communication with sound provenance outranks the 1884 on history. The 1884 wins only on wearability, the Fleming story, and the dialogue it sets up with a Patek 5130G: a mature system from the house Cottier worked for against a first-generation independent's vintage ébauche plus module.

Risks

Succession. Svend Andersen is 84. Marco Poluzzi, who makes the Communication 45 cases, was 83 at the June 2025 launch (Monochrome), so the two key craftsmen are the same generation. Aeschlimann is a sole owner with no disclosed capital or archive plan of the kind Journe arranged with Chanel. The upside is a 50th anniversary programme in 2030 with a catalogue raisonné; a 250-page brand book appeared in 2025. The downside is a sale or closure that leaves world time, calendar and automaton modules without a service address, which could make both price comparisons and ownership more difficult across the catalogue.

Thin samples. EveryWatch tracks 227 Andersen records, 156 at auction, over the brand's whole history. Two bidders make a trend. A search summary once reported a Columbus at CHF 1,460,500 in May 2026; the Phillips page says CHF 24,130.

Model dispersion. Metal, size, dial, JHP stamp, box and papers and service history can move price by more than 100% within one reference. The Secular Calendar count (30 or 100) and the Communication subscription total (50 to 100) are unresolved.

JHP case premium. The CHF 114,300 prints are Hagmann-cased. The same complication in a Scherrer or in-house case has no comparable print and should not be valued off them.

Ébauche supply. Modern world timers use new-old-stock A. Schild 1876, the Rattrapante uses Venus 179, the jumping hours use Frédéric Piguet 11.50. No public statement covers what happens when stock runs out. Modules are serviceable only in Geneva.

FX. A Hong Kong buyer's return is in HKD. CHF/HKD at about 9.66 on 2026-09-02 is a reading rate, not a hedge.

Horizon view

HorizonViewWhat would change it
Short (0 to 2 years)Founder-era firsts and Hagmann uniques keep printing above estimates still set by the old market; my base case is flat to up for the Accumulate group. Modern editions continue to clear below list, so Avoid at Retail stands. The 1884 stays flat around its CHF 10,000 to 11,000 hammer anchors: Hold.Additional completed auctions, unsold lots and primary-source confirmation of disputed records, in particular the Ineichen 2022 premium basis. A Rising Sun or Celestial Voyager print at or above list would break the discount thesis. A second 1884 white gold sale above CHF 15,000 with premium would move the 1884 from Hold towards Accumulate; another unsold lot at HKD 60,000 to 80,000 would confirm the flat line.
Mid (3 to 5 years)The catalogue gets sorted. If a catalogue raisonné, a thematic Andersen sale or a Svend retrospective arrives, the Accumulate group re-rates the way Daniels and Roth did after curation; the 40th Anniversary BlueGold is the one modern piece that could join it. Columbus in rare metals holds its ground. Standard modern editions and the 1884 trade sideways, so Hold and Avoid at Retail stand.Archive access, provenance documentation and continuity of specialist servicing. Svend's formal retirement or death would raise the documented founder-era pieces and do nothing for post-2015 work. A Sotheby's or Phillips Andersen-only sale, or the 2030 anniversary programme, would be the catalyst; its absence would leave the mid-term view at flat.
Long (5 to 10 years)The ceiling depends on whether the market places Svend in the Daniels, Roth and Journe line of independent founders. Only museum-narrative pieces (Communication 24, Mundus, the 1996 Secular Calendar, Hagmann uniques) have a path to that ceiling. Editions defined by metal or dial changes, and the 1884, ride the brand at best. No return target is assigned.A sustained collector base, scholarship and workshop continuity. A corporate acquisition that re-catalogues the archive would lift the historic core (Roth and Genta precedent); a sale that closes the service address would hurt every module-based reference including the 1884. A cooling of the independent bid would hit the thin-market references first.

Methodology and data

This report merges two studies run on 2026-09-04 and 2026-09-05 across ten research angles. The second put the eight results most material to the conclusion through adversarial re-verification against the original auction pages: five held, three were downgraded to disputed (the Ineichen 2022 premium basis, the Sotheby's 2024 outcome, and the Monaco Legend Columbus date, corrected to 2026-04-26). Data are as of 2026-09-05; the newest verified transactions are Phillips Geneva, 2026-05-10, and the newest snapshots are September 2026 dealer listings and a live Loupe This Mundus lot.

Prices stay in source currency. Auction results include buyer's premium where the house reports it; Ineichen is shown as hammer. Dealer, Chrono24 and marketplace figures are asking prices and supply signals only. Charity results are shown but not used as fair value. HKD conversions use about 9.66 per CHF.

Facts checked by web search for this report: Aeschlimann's ownership since March 2015 (Quill & Pad, The Luxury Report); the 2023 GPHG Special Jury Prize (SJX, GPHG); Marco Poluzzi's age and the 2022 acquisition of his workshop (Monochrome, 2025-06-27); and the Sotheby's Hong Kong 2024 outcomes for the 1884 lot 8854 and the Columbus lot 2634, both recorded as not sold by Collector Square's price index because Sotheby's shows results only to logged-in users. The Ineichen premium basis remains pending: the house's conditions cancel buyer's premium from May 2022, and the sale was on 2022-04-23. Entries marked as pending still require confirmation against the original source.

Ratings use a five-step scale: Accumulate, Selective Accumulate, Hold, Reduce, Avoid at Retail, with Watch for references that have no usable secondary evidence. They describe my base case for a documented example bought at auction-level prices, net of the buyer's premium and future selling costs. This is a dated market study, not investment advice. Andersen Genève is an illiquid collectable with a small buyer pool; transaction frequency and future exit costs remain uncertain.
